Chaminda Vaas Joins Delhi Capitals as Fast Bowling Coach for IPL 2027

Delhi Capitals have made a major coaching appointment ahead of IPL 2027, naming Sri Lankan fast-bowling great Chaminda Vaas as their fast bowling coach. The move signals that the Capitals are building a serious support staff as they target a title run in the next edition of the Indian Premier League.

A legendary resume

Vaas is Sri Lanka’s most successful pace bowler of all time. Across his international career he claimed 355 Test wickets from 111 matches and 400 ODI wickets from 322 games — 761 international wickets in total. Known for his left-arm swing, accuracy and devastating yorkers, he played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s 1996 Cricket World Cup triumph and the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy victory.

Few bowlers in history have combined new-ball swing with such relentless precision. That skillset is exactly what young fast bowlers in the Capitals squad will now get to learn from first-hand.

Coaching experience across the world

This is far from Vaas’s first coaching role. He served multiple stints as Sri Lanka’s national bowling coach between 2012 and 2022, worked as a consultant with the New Zealand men’s team, and was part of Ireland’s backroom staff during the 2016 T20 World Cup. More recently, he coached in franchise leagues, including NYS Lagos in the Zim Afro T10 League in 2024 and the Kandy Royals in the Lanka Premier League in 2026.

That breadth of experience — international cricket, multiple associate and franchise setups, and a decade of coaching at the highest level — makes him one of the most qualified bowling mentors available in the T20 circuit.

What it means for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2027

Delhi’s fast-bowling unit has often been the difference between a good season and a great one. Bringing in a coach of Vaas’s calibre suggests the franchise is investing in technical excellence and consistency, not just star signings. Expect to see:

  • Better death bowling: Vaas’s yorker expertise is the most valuable skill a T20 bowling coach can teach.
  • New-ball discipline: his trademark swing and seam control could sharpen the Capitals’ powerplay attack.
  • Young bowler development: with his track record of mentoring, Delhi’s uncapped Indian pacers stand to benefit the most.

The road to IPL 2027

With the appointment made this early, Vaas will have time to assess the squad, identify targets ahead of the player auction, and shape a bowling strategy well before the season begins. The Capitals are clearly laying strong foundations early, hoping the combined experience of their backroom staff can finally deliver the elusive IPL trophy.

For Delhi fans, this is a statement signing — not a player, but the mentor who could make their bowlers title-worthy. The countdown to IPL 2027 just got a lot more interesting.
